Yahoo!:Google
Yahoo!

Integrating User Experience with Engineering
May 24th, 2007It’s an exciting time at Habanero! We’re making great headway with creating much closer ties between our UE team and the Engineering folks as we strive to knock down those silos that can threaten to isolate one department from another.
One of our developers, Daniel, asked if I’d like to write up a blog posting on some of the work going on between the teams, and then, because he’s such a good guy he volunteered that he’d already written something up that I might like to use. Sounded great to me! However, rather than take the credit for his efforts, I’ll just paste in what he gave me.
So without further ado, here are Daniel’s thoughts… Read the rest of this entry »
Usability is good business
May 18th, 2007Quick facts
* $1 spent up front saves $10 during development and $100 after release
* Reduce development time by 33-50%
* Reduce need for training by at least 25%
* Reduce call centre volume by up to 66%
* Increase customer satisfaction
* Increased revenues and customer retention
* Huge reduction in errors
* Increased productivity
* Avoid costly design flaws before you start coding.
A large proportion of the code for your site or application deals with the interface. It pays to get it right before a line of code is written.
“Once a system is in development, correcting a problem costs 10 times as much as fixing the same problem in design. If the system has been released, it costs 100 times as much relative to fixing in design.”

一句不得不翻译的经验之谈。I must translate the following text…
May 18th, 2007The interface structure determines the interface design—it defines the paths and navigation that the user of the product will take to find information or perform a task. If usability engineering is not applied at the start of interface design, the interface structure is where serious usability problems emerge. Since 80% of the usability of an interface is a function of its structure,[1] a retrofit often amounts to a redevelopment of the entire presentation layer. That is why the best solution is to design the interface right the first time.
“用户界面的结构决定了产品界面的最终设计概貌,因为它定义了这个产品的用户找到信息和执行任务的交互方法的导航方式,如果在界面设计早期没有应用可用性工程的理论和方法,界面结构就会暴露出严重的可用性问题,80%的功能界面的可用性问题是结构设计不合理导致的,一个重新定义结构的过程常常需重新开发整个系统的表现层,这就是为什么最好的方案就是在第一时间就开始正确的设计界面结构的原因 。
Five Questions with Skype co-founder Janus Friis
May 18th, 2007
Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, together could be considered Internet’s biggest trouble makers. As co-founders of Kazaa they brought the wrath of the entire music establishment. With Skype they poked the telephone industry in the eye, before flipping it to eBay for billions. And now they are taking on the television business, with their new start-up, The Venice Project.
But the leopards are changing their spots, and are playing nice with the establishment. Infact, it was one of the main reasons Friis and Zennstrom settled their differences with the music industry and forked over $100 million. They have been building the Venice Project in a stealthy fashion, but are getting close to launch. GigaOM got a chance to chat with Janus yesterday, and here are excerpts from that interview.
Om Malik: What is The Venice Project? Janus Friis: Television is the most powerful mass medium, and we are trying to do is marry the best of television with the best of internet. What people love about the television is the story telling. What people don’t like is television that is locked in linear time. We want to try and preserve the best bits of television, and discard bits people don’t care for.
People like the freedom of choice and like freedom from choice. For example, channels are good, because they define the content. Today, the channels are locked in legacy infrastructure, but on broadband the channels are not locked in time.
That’s what the Venice Project is doing. What we have done is created a streaming P2P platform for television. This is a platform, which is good for content owners, for advertisers and of course the viewers. Since there are no borders on the Internet, this is a global platform. Sometimes we think content owners have legal reasons to restrict content locally and the technology allows them to do that.
OM: When will you launch the service? What are the bandwidth requirements for The Venice Project? And how good of a quality will the streams have.
JF: Like Skype, The Venice Project is simple - you download and you get free television. There is nothing complicated and simple. Our software is already in beta, and we are doing some bug squashing right now. You can sign-up and we are inviting more people to our beta program. It is near television quality, and it needs about one megabit per second.
OM: Does the Venice Project use the same core underlying technologies that were used in Kazaa and Skype?
JF: Kazaa and Skype were based on a piece of technology called the “Global Index.?? Skype basically built a communication layer on top of that. That technology has evolved since then, and the Venice Project, is built on that global index and we have developed a P2P video streaming layer on top of that core technology. (*)
OM: What is the business model for The Venice Project?
JF: We are building an ad-based system, and it is close to the television model. We will do revenue share with the content providers. With our system, people can be targeted with the right kind of ads. We are respecting the copyrights. We will reveal more details about the technology soon.
OM: Does this mean that you are spending less time on Skype?
JF: Niklas and I are entreprenuers at heart, and eBay understands that. I am still at Skype and I think that is where I spend most of my time. On The Venice Project we have tried to build a management team that will take care of things.
(*) Om’s Notes: The Global Index mentioned by Janus is actually Joltid Global Index Software that is owned by a company called Joltid Limited, in which Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis have an equity interest. The company was not part of the Skype-Ebay transaction.

GUI and TUI
May 18th, 2007GUI—graphical user interface
This diagram illustrates the graphical user interface that was originated by the famous Xerox Star work station in the early eighties. The graphical user interface provides a variety of components, like windows, menus, or icons, but it represents these
components as intangible pixels. The basic medium of the representation is pixels on the computer screen: that is intangible. To control these representations, the graphical user interface provides generic remote controllers, like a mouse or a keyboard. One of the key
features of graphical user interface is the separation of intangible representations from general purpose remote controllers, which enables flexibility and malleability.
Turbo Tax Online is not the bastion of usability
May 18th, 2007Last year, I used desktop turbo tax and found it to be the best thing in usability since that little plastic thing that keeps the top of the pizza box from crushing the cheesy goodness beneath it.
This year, I upped the ante a bit… and tried TT online. My taxes are a bit more complicated this year, I admit (although not much more), but there are no excuses for the strange instructions and lack of help I’ve found here. Nothing is worse than a help/search that can’t help you or find what you’re looking for. Trust is lost and you’re less apt to use these tools.
A few examples of my frustrations….
Federal:
- I’m trying to figure out some moving expenses stuff… and I get this error message:
…this looks pretty cool. Except, as far as I can tell, there’s no progress bar nor is there an “easy step navagator” [sic]. I have no idea what to do with this. As far as I can tell from the top and side navigation bars (not included here..sorry) I can’t find a progress bar, or an easy step navigator. What is this all about?
State Taxes:
-As far as I know- there’s not way to edit a single portion of my state taxes without walking step by step through every single section, GREATLY increasing the odds I’ll change an option I don’t intend to. In the federal portion, you can choose an “area” to step into and edit. This appears to not be the case in the state.
-See the screenshot from two posts ago. I still don’t know where to put my rental information. I clicked the appropriately labeled “Where do I enter?” button and get taken back to my federal return to start entering information about my rental properties.
**Update. After walking through the W-2 portion again- I fixed the above error. But what was most frustrating about it (and worthy of an update) was that when I went to “link the city I moved too” it was already filled out! TT already had some link between the moving expenses and the city. It it just wanted a confirmation, why not present that to me at the time the above screenshot is shown?
