Yahoo Video is getting a lot of hype right now. Everyone is talking about how great it is and all of the good features, but no one is really talking about how they messed up. They are Yahoo, a big search giant, so you would think they know what they are doing. The overall design looks pretty good and they provide some great features, but they messed up in some big ways.

I did a search for "web 2.0" and I got some results on a search page. They have something great called channels, but it's on the left side. The focus should be the search and not the channels. I'm fine with having the channels on the left like they do on this page, but things should stay consistent on all of the search result pages. I clicked on the second page for more results and got this: What happened to the channels area? If they are going to put something on the search results they should keep it consistent. Instead of the search results being in the middle they are now on the left. If they did this with their search engine a lot of people would be irritated and some may even get confused. Also, if you look at the picture above there is a little play button on each video screenshot. I found the video I was looking for and clicked on the little play button. I was not 100 percent sure if it was going to show me a preview on that page or if it was going to take me to another page. Usually, when I see a play button I expect a video to play, not take me to another page which is what happened. I see this new page and I saw the big video screen box and knew that I could now play the video on this page. Guess again. When I clicked play it opened up the video in Windows Media Player. I hate to say it, but that's just too many clicks to see the video I want! I guess I'm spoiled by more usable video sites. I would have expected more from Yahoo Video, but I guess they have something "bigger" in mind. Or perhaps they were just trying to throw their weight around via a solid brand in the video sector. I'm not sure what happened, but it looks to me like a rush job and hopefully these "small" problems will be fixed in the future. Who knows, but this is certainly not going in the same direction as everything else: Simple. |
